How Project Management Fits Together

Projects, value, delivery and the operating environment

Chapter 01 of 8Read as a practical lesson

Project management is not just scheduling

Project management is the discipline of organizing people, decisions, resources and work so that a temporary initiative can create an intended outcome. A plan is important; the operating system around the plan is what keeps delivery moving.

Project, program, portfolio and operations

QuestionPractical answer
ProjectTemporary effort with a defined outcome
ProgramRelated projects managed together for additional benefits or control
PortfolioInvestments grouped around strategic objectives
OperationsOngoing activities that keep the business running

Outputs are not the whole story

A new website is an output. A shorter sales cycle, better customer experience or additional recurring revenue is closer to an outcome. Good project thinking keeps the connection visible.

Governance

Governance clarifies who can make which decisions, how information moves, and how accountability works. Without it, even a capable team can stall because every important decision waits for an undefined approver.

What a PM should always know

What are we trying to achieve?
What is currently committed?
What has changed?
What is at risk?
Who needs to decide?
What evidence says we are progressing?
