Initiation is about authorization and direction
Before a team builds a detailed schedule, someone needs to establish why the project exists, what success means, who owns it, and what authority the project manager has.
Business case vs charter
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Business case | Why the investment makes sense; options, value, costs, risks and expected benefits |
| Project charter | Formal project authorization and high-level direction |
| Project plan | How the project will be organized and delivered in enough detail for the chosen approach |
Good objectives
Objectives should describe the result the project is expected to achieve. “Build a new store” is an activity. “Launch a store that supports subscriptions and reduces manual repeat ordering” is closer to an outcome.
Early assumptions and constraints
Record what you believe to be true and what limits the project. A constraint may be budget, date, technology, regulation, capacity or contractual commitment. An assumption is something treated as true for planning purposes until it is validated.
Portfolio artifact
Create a one-page project charter for a fictional eCommerce migration. Keep it readable enough to use in an executive meeting.
Initiation creates permission to invest
Before a schedule becomes detailed, the project needs a credible reason to exist. What problem is worth spending money and attention on? What options were considered? What is the intended outcome? What constraints are already known?
Do not over-specify too early
Early estimates are based on assumptions. A good charter makes those assumptions visible instead of pretending that the team has already discovered every requirement. The project can then refine the plan as discovery produces evidence.
Problem: legacy platform blocks recurring revenue growth.
Objective: migrate to a scalable platform and launch subscriptions without interrupting core sales operations.
Constraint: fixed peak-season deadline.
Success: migration completed, critical data reconciled, subscription flow live, no unacceptable checkout regression.
Write a one-page charter for migrating an online retailer to Shopify. Include purpose, objective, success measures, scope boundaries, sponsor, assumptions, constraints and dependencies.
