Delivery, Closure & Learning

Finish the project without losing the learning

Chapter 08 of 8Read as a practical lesson

Delivery is more than “development complete”

Near the end of a project, the team needs to confirm acceptance, operational readiness, documentation, training, support ownership, outstanding risks and transition arrangements.

Acceptance vs closure

A deliverable can be accepted while the project still has closure work. Closure confirms that the project or phase is formally complete, information is archived appropriately, outstanding commercial or operational matters are addressed, and the team captures lessons.

Lessons learned that are actually useful

“Communication should improve” is too vague. A useful lesson explains the situation, why the outcome happened, and what should change next time.

QuestionPractical answer
Weak lessonWe needed better communication.
Useful lessonClient approvals were delayed because decision owners were not named in the initial stakeholder map. Future projects will identify approval authority during initiation.

Measure the outcome

Where practical, return to the original success measures. A project should leave behind more than files; it should leave behind a result the organization can operate and evaluate.
